Keeping Up to Date Participants in this project can keep up to date with ongoing developments a number of ways:

1. You can learn what tutorials are being worked on by consulting our List of Online Resources Identified for Development, our Information Literacy Tutorials Identified for Development and other types of tutorials identified for development which are listed under How to Contribute. These lists are current as participants are asked to post what they are working on, or have completed so other participants have access to current information.

2. You can set up your profile to WATCH pages and recieve E-mail Notifications / updates about site activity (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) If you want to subscribe to our Discussion Forum or Receive UPDATES about ALL SITE ACTIVITY, view this Powerpoint Demonstration. It will tell you how to do so. If you want to subscribe to Individual Pages, then:

Log into the Wiki using your account information
Select the relevant page (for instance the Best Practices Page
Beside the Easy Edit icon are a number of options – Select More Tools.
Select Watch Page from the Drop Down Menu listed under More Tools.
Select My Profile (far right side of the Toolbar) – then select Email Notifications and tell it to send notifications when Items Change in your watchlist.

This Watch page can be set for any of our ANTS Wiki pages but not for the Feature Pages Wetpaint Provides (i.e. the Discussion Forum, Updates - or any of the ones on their Red Toolbar) You can be notified about any changes to them, but you will have to use their RSS Feed options. To do so, view the Powerpoint we have created. As a general rule it is very useful to tell it to watch our (a) lists of resources identified for development (so you know what work people are doing on each tutorial), (b) our Discussion forum and (c) our Best Practices in Screencasting. All of this can be accomplished if you just tell it to notify you of any updates to the site.

3. If you use an aggregator you can also point it to an RSS Feed for New Pages, Recently Updated Pages, Recent Comments and New Pages - which is listed under Site Reports & RSS Feeds. (NOTE: To learn all about how to see the latest changes to the site read our section on RSS Feeds in our FAQ.)

4. People can learn of completed Tutorials by subscribing to DSpace. It will then notify you any time new content is added.

5. If the idea of being notified via iTunes, 1Click or Miro appeals to you, use one of the feeds on our Screencast.com site or our LION TV Site. They also provides RSS Feeds. These sites will send notices about completed tutorials.

There are a number of other sites out there that encourage people to share their work and collaborate in developing new content that benefits everyone. Here are a few of our favorites.

1. PRIMO: Peer Reviewed Instructional Materials Online

Put together by ACRL this site contains peer reviewed instructional material designed by librarians. Content can range from broader information literacy tutorials to a few database tutorials. (ANTS differs from it in that we began our project by focusing on creating current tutorials for e-resources - whose interfaces are constantly evolving - and hence do not incorporate peer-review as many products would have changed interfaces by the time they were peer reviewed.)

2. CLIP: Cooperative Library Instruction Program

CLIP has as one of its goals the creation of "standards and procedures that would provide for cooperative production of [library instruction] modules that could easily be borrowed and integrated into consistent and cohesive individual library instructional efforts". It states that "this project provides a model for shared creation and use of standardized, mix and match, library instruction modules. " Many tutorials have been created by NSUOK library staff using their standardized approach.

3. CORIL

"CORIL (Cooperative Online Repository for Information Literacy) is an initiative to support information literacy instruction among Canadian universities". Among the project's aims are to create a broad range of library related learning objects, to facilitate sharing, to create a learning community for Canadian instruction materials and to provide a "mechanism for peer reviewed publication of instruction materials".

4. ALPS Link

Link is a "repository of learning objects to support academic librarians in their instructional role." Is is part of an initiative put forward by librarians in the Province of British Columbia and presently contains word documents, pdfs and powerpoint slides pertaining to information literacy.

5. Encyclopedia of Life (EOL)

EOL is a "Comprehensive, collaborative, ever-growing, and personalized, ... ecosystem of websites that makes all key information about life on Earth accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world. [It's] goal is to create a constantly evolving encyclopedia that lives on the Internet, with contributions from scientists and amateurs alike. To transform the science of biology, and inspire a new generation of scientists, by aggregating all known data about every living species. And ultimately, to increase our collective understanding of life on Earth, and safeguard the richest possible spectrum of biodiversity."

Although this is not a sharing site for libraries, it is one that demonstrates the potential of technology to allow people across institutions to work together and achieve something great. We love it and cannot say enough good things about the project.

6. Architecture for Humanity
This organization started with $700.00 and a web site. It brings together people to design shelters, healthcare facilities, etc, throughout the world. It asks people to create designs to meet specific needs for specific events and to make these designs accessible to everyone via a Third World Creative Commons License (people retain ownership of ideas but allow others to view and use it for sustainable development purposes in the Third World.) It also emphasises the need for designs that enable people to create sustainable communities where the poor always can find shelter. There is a video of the presentation given at TED which is truly inspiring. It is an example of how great things can be accomplished through technology and a willingness to share.

7. Science of Collaboratories Project
This project "is devoted to understanding the technical and behavioral principles that can lead to better, more successul design of collaboratories in the future"...in other words - a site designed to examine collaboration. It is very useful as it includes a long listing of Collaborative Projects which they have identified and are investigating. It is a great resource for librarians and faculty seeking to understand the dynamics of collaboration and how it is impacting scholarship. The site is produced by the School of Information at the University of Michegan.

Best Practices in Screencasting

This site provides individuals with information about how to design tutorials effectively, information on how to measure the effectiveness of tutorials, as well as some information on screencasting and video sites. These initial postings are the result of the work done by members of our project, but we welcome any and all information pertinent to better and more effective tutorial design.

1. ANTS Guidelines for Designing Animated Tutorials

ANTS provides people with Guidelines for Designing Animated Tutorials. These guidelines work to ensure that each tutorials is (a) substantive enough to be useful to all, (b) highly viewable, and (c) easily exchangeable. Many have commented that their usefulness makes them a good starting point for anyone who wants some clues to better design.

2. Google Analytics and .swf tutorials screencast. Created by Paul Betty, ANTS project member.

This screencast examines how to track usage statistics of your .swf tutorials using Google Analytics. Google Analytics is a free service that allows you to track usage statistics of your entire website. However, to track use and downloads of non HTML files requires a small amount of programming and modification of source files. This screencast details how Google Analytics works, and describes the necessary steps needed to track .swf files (the most common output of screencasting software). Examples for Adobe Captivate 3, Qarbon Viewlet Builder 5, and Camtasia Studio 5 are included.

3.Publishing Adobe Captivate files on YouTube article from Adobe.com

Most video hosting services, including Youtube, do not accept the .swf file format. This quick overview explains how and why you need to convert your .swf tutorials to digital video for optimal performance using a third party video hosting service. Note: The ANTS project members handle all .swf to digital video conversions for tutorials submitted to ANTS. This allows our volunteers to focus on creating tutorials and minimizes the time and work requirements placed upon them. The ANTS project is continually exploring new ways to deliver screencasts, and will soon offer access to a variety of source files, .swf, and digital video via our multiple web interfaces.

4. Adding Surveys to Tutorials by Richard Baer ANTS Team Member

A good way to see how effective a tutorial is, is by adding a survey at the end of it. You can get viewers to give you feedback, so next time you design your learning object it is more effective. Richard Baer - of the ANTS team, demonstrates how this can be done in his CINAHL Alerts Tutorial. You will see a link to the survey at the end of the tutorial. If you follow it, he provides a password which can be used to take the online survey. The survey software is free, so it is both effective and affordable!*

5. Lib 2.0 Resources Page: Screencasting From Lib2.0 Wiki

"This page lists examples of library tutorials on a variety of subjects - catalogs, databases, internet searching and more. Many were created with screencasting software, while others have been created with Flash and other graphics tools that require more technical and graphics expertise." It also lists information on the software used to create Screencasts, as well as a list of other resources.

6. Streaming Select Videos by Carmen Kazakoff-Lane

Demonstrates how to create specialized playlists from sites such as LION TV and Youtube and mount them on a web page, blog, (etc) so you can create point of need videos specific to a course, your home page, a databases page (or whatever you feel is appropriate.) It also links to our How to Embed section so you will know how to use embedding code for this purpose.

7. Camtasia 6.0 tips by Richard Baer

I've just started with Camtasia 6.0 and want to pass on a few ideas.
Camtasia Studio 6.0 has many new features that make your life much easier.

** HD production preset. The HD preset produces your video to .mp4 format. It is not necessarily HD format. You have to change the settings in the preset so that it always produces in HD. Techsmith has put two videos and screen caps with text on this page that show you how to do it.

You can now modify the URL that plays the tutorial so that it automatically plays the HD version at Youtube.
To do this, add the string &hd=1 to the end of the URL if you are embedding the video or using the link from one of your pages.

**Editing for your audience and for universal distribution.
When you make a video for your own library audience, its content may be completely local, quite generic or generic with some local content.

That last category is one that I've been working on as I wanted to explore creation of content that is useful for local purposes - and is easy to edit into a shareable version stripped of local content.
As an example, I have done two versions of the same tutorial.*

This version skips Camosun and goes from Google to the welcome screen for ASP at about 54 seconds.

When scripting it for my own library, I needed to ensure that the local content occurred in a block that could be easily snipped out of the file. When you are showing databases, local content is usually the navigation from your homepage into the database.

The best practice is to either be silent when your mouse is doing local navigation - or have narration connected to the local navigation only. Then you have one edit, i.e. cutting out the local navigation section. If you leave a one second pause at the beginning and end of the local section, then it makes it easier to cut. When you upload it to DSpace or other repository, then another library has an easy to use insertion point. They can split the timeline at the insertion point and insert their own local navigation recording.

This Jing video http://screencast.com/t/FzncOkmUw8 explains what I mean. I left a silent section at beginning and end to aid editing. I would produce this as it is recorded, then snip out the short Camosun bit, then produce it again to a different directory for uploading to DSpace, etc.

The same principle applies at the end of a tutorial. At the end of the demonstrated search we often want to show how to access the article through our journal list. If you pause slightly, then you can cut out the local content at the end.

** Those pesky ums and ahs and dead air.
Even when you use the F9 key to pause while the machine works away to load a page, you still have sections of 1 to 4 seconds when there is nothing happening. Through a lot of error, I discovered a trick to editing those out.

Put the right hand editing bar just before (.25 second) the place where you want to resume. Then start backing the the left editing bar backwards to just after (.25 second) your last complete and useful sound. You should then have a section of dead air that can be snipped safely. Check that the flow is smooth because it is much easier to undo the cut just after you have made it.

How To Utilize Existing Tutorials

If you want to learn more about how to use existing tutorials, it is easy.

Step 1: Consult our Access ANTS Files and Embedding Code in order to access all necessary Files and Code.

Step 2: Follow our Information on Embedding Tutorials or Streaming Select Tutorials if you need to learn more about this.

Step 3: Select Share / Embed / Subscribe under a specific episode at LION TV if you wish to use its advanced Sharing and Subscription features.

Step 4: Select Syndicate at LION TV if you wish to Syndicate all Episodes from the LION TV site at your site.

Step 5: Check out our Best Practices in Screencasting if you want to learn about including surveys in existing tutorials or including Google Analytics to measure usage (if you download a tutorial and want to measure its usage locally.)

Streaming Videos

Two of ANTS sites: LION TV and Screencast.Com provide embedding code for individual screencasts. LION TV also provides for streaming of videos - but it streams all content instead of select content.

If you want to stream a collection of videos from LION TV, YouTube, etc, the a great tool is Embedr which is free, easy to use and it enables you to select what videos to stream as well as the sequence they are streamed in. You can create your own personal account at the site or create the streaming as a guest.

To stream select videos (such as LION TV's CINAHL Tutorials)

1. Go to Embedr (http://embedr.com/ ) and either log in, create an account or use it as a guest.
2. Tell Embedr to Build a Playlist by selecting this Tab on it home page.
3. Go to sites like LION TV and select the embedding code you want (for information on how to do this with LION TV see our Embedding tutorials section.)
4. Enter each clip of embedding code in one box at Embedr (Embedr will provide several boxes but does so one at time - adding a new box each time you tell it to Add a video to your playlist.)
5. Arrange the sequence of the playlist by dragging and dropping each box into the appropriate order
6. Embedr will create a playlist much like this: http://embedr.com/playlist/cinahl-tutorials-list-created-from-animated-tutorial-sharing-project
7. Arrow over its share image on the upper right corner of the screencast. It will give you its:

Link to this Playlist
Post playlist to (various sites such as Facebook)

8. If you want to stream your selected videos to a web page, blog, etc, grab the embedding code beside "Embed this Playlist" and incorpate it into your website. It will stream the videos and include a screenshot of all videos below the player that looks like this: http://www.brandonu.ca/library/embedding/streaming.htm
9. Use the link for linking or the "Post to" code for posting to different sites such as Digg, Del.ic.ious, Facebook, MySpace, Stubleupon and AddThis.

This should work with embedding codes derived from any site that has them and will enable you to select screencasts appropriate to a course, library home page, (etc) so you can provide people with appropriate instructional materials at their point of need.

ANTS and LION TV

The ANimated Tutorial Sharing Project now supports a new site: the Library Information literacy Online Network or LION TV. (http://liontv.blip.tv)

UPDATE 02/06/09: Yeah! Errors with the automated .m4v conversion on the LION TV site seem to have been corrected. The latest tutorials added to the LION TV website should now also be available for download via our iTunes feed: http://liontv.blip.tv/rss/itunes.

LION TV is an Educational Network whose Information Literacy Broadcasts are directed at Teachers, Professors, Students or members of the General Public. It will not replace the ANTS worksites used by professional librarians, but rather will work to enhance the work performed by ANTS members by providing them with (1) an Online Network with Video Sharing Capabilities and a better screen resolution than YouTube and (2) a means of pushing the broadcasts created for ANTS out to popular Brand sites where people spend a lot of time online. A review of the site indicates that:

Broadcasts at this site are so clear that you can view the text typed into a search box.
Individual Episodes can be easily located and displayed.
It has excellent Sharing, Embedding, Linking, and E-mailing capabilities.
Viewers can opt to easily Syndicate all LION TV episodes at their own sites.
Anyone Embedding Episodes or Syndicating the Show, can select the size of screen they wish to see displayed at their site, so they are not restricted to small screens.
Identifying Files, Metadata and Creative Commons Rights for each Episode is very easy.
Viewers can subscribe to LION TV’s broadcasts using RSS, Miro, Pando or iTunes.
Viewers can provide Feedback to each episode.
The home page for LION TV provides viewers with a lot of information about Information Literacy and Libraries.

Less visibly:

The site makes use of excellent Push Technology to send broadcasts out to popular Brand sites on the Internet like Facebook, Blinkx, iTunes, Flickr, AOL Video, Yahoo Video, MySpace, MeFeedia, Meebo, MeeVee, Lycos Mix, del.ic.ious and Internet Archive - so even though the broadcasts are not on YouTube, they are ubiquitous.
The site has excellent statistics which enables us to keep track of viewing numbers for each episode.

While not all distribution sites have been officially posted to, we are working at getting the content out to as many sites as possible. In the interim you can:

Librarians wishing to add to the LION TV’s broadcasts can do so by adding a tutorial or video broadcast to the ANTS repository at DSpace.[1] We will take the content, do the file conversions, and upload it to LION TV. So all you need do is create and upload. We will handle the rest.

We at ANTS and LION TV are very excited about this new site as we recognize that Librarians and Educators today face an enormous challenge in attempting to be seen and heard amidst all of the noise on the Internet - and we believe that LION TV can help. LION TV places Librarian created content onto popular brand sites and this content then directs people back to a new Library Brand site: LION TV. Once there, people will discover an Online Network with professional insight into the complex World of Information. In short, LION TV’s approach to broadcasting and brand name promotion – combined with the rich array of content coming from contributors to ANTS – will work to ensure that libraries and librarians are once again visible where many people spend their time online.

LION TV contains many broadcasts and with the help of our fellow librarians in institutions everywhere, will continue to add to our list of them. If you would like to assist with this initiative, we would encourage you to (1) become a contributing member of ANTS (see: How to Contribute ) and (2) ensure that students, teachers, faculty or members of the general public know about this site by promoting it to your users.

How to Contribute

As an Open Source project with no technological or geographical restrictions, ANTS welcomes participation from professional librarians everywhere. ANTS is more than a sharing project --- it is also a test case for how to collaborate regardless of distance. In order to facilitate this, we have provided librarians with a central repository where they can both upload and download files, as well as the means to communicate what work is being done across institutions. If you would like to contribute to this worthy project, simply follow the instructions provided below:

Step 1: Check the list of e-resource / database tutorials identified for development.

This list indicates the databases and resources the ANTS team has identified as relevant to the project and our audience.There are additional separate lists for information literacy tutorials, literacy tutorials, data and GIS tutorials, and tutorials for handicapped users. If you do not see your topic or resource listed, contact the ANTS team to see if the resource or topic covered in your tutorial is appropriate for the project.

Step 2: Adopt a tutorial.

In order to do this you will need to get an account at this Wiki. It is straighforward, easy to do, and once you have it you can use it to post what tutorial you are working on so others know what is being done.

Step 3: Check the ANTS project guidelines and the Best Practices in Screencasting.

Since the tutorial will be shared with other libraries, please refrain from referring to institutional specific services and resources so as to ensure the broadest possible audience. If you've already created a tutorial, this may mean editing or removing content that refers specifically to your home institution. While brief and flexible, the guidelines are meant to ensure continuity in presentation style and content among the various tutorials submitted to the project.

You may also want to check the Best Practices Section for additional ideas when creating a tutorial - but none of these are requirements for contribution to the project.

Step 4: Upload your project to ANTS.

Step 5: Notify Others of the New Content

Perhaps one of the most important things you should do is update the Wiki list once a tutorial is completed / updated and uploaded to ANTS. This step ensures that everyone knows that current content exists for a particular tutorial - thereby helping to eliminate redundancy of effort.

When you contribute files to the project, we will make them available at two additional sites with embedding code for SWF Files and FLV Files. They are Screencast.Com and LION TV. Both also have notification systems any time we transfer files to them from our central repository at DSpace.

About the ANTS Project

ANTS Purpose and Goal

Over the years, libraries have witnessed a significant growth in their number of online resources; matched with an increasing demand for 24/7 information literacy. At the same time new software - that allows librarians to capture Search Screens and insert audio and/or text - means that librarians can quickly create highly professional Animated Tutorials.

Recognizing that creating and updating Tutorials for each online resource is a daunting task for any library to undertake on its own, librarians in COPPUL got together to find a way to share in their development. This project is an outgrowth of that initiative and our goal is to create a critical mass of Open Source Tutorials for online resources used by libraries everywhere.

How ANTS Enables Sharing

ANTS works by allowing librarians to efficiently build shared resources across institutions. It does so by taking advantage of a host of Open Source, Social Software and Basic Guidelines which provides participants with:

A central repository (DSpace):
1. That any librarian can get an account at - and upload content to.
2. Where all Source Code and SWF files are easily located.
Wiki lists that are open to all - list where participants can learn – and communicate across institutions:
1. What has been developed
2. What is being worked on
3. What is in need of development (NOTE: as this list is on a Wiki it is dynamic - so the list of items in need of development will evolve according to demand. They include Online Resources Tutorial Lists, Information Literacy Lists, Handicapped Users Lists, Literacy Tutorials Lists and DATA & GIS Tutorials Lists)
End products that are generic enough to be used not just in one library – but in any library. (For further Information see the ANTS Guidelines)
The ability to instantaneously learn about new content via RSS Feeds and Notifications.
The ability to learn about what rights they have in relation to specific tutorials via our Creative Commons Information at DSpace and LION TV.
A host of value added service that enable librarians to:
1. Share FLV (Flash Movie), AVI (Windows Media Player) and soon MPEG 4 Video (m4v) Files via our LION TV site.
2. Access Embedding Code for both FLV and SWF Files via our LION TV and Screencast.com sites.
3. Learn all about how to Upload Files via our DSpace Tutorial (which includes info about Viewletbuilder files), Camtasia or Captivate Tutorials.

5. Learn more about how to optomize tutorials via our Guidelines and Best Practices in Screencasting sites.
6. Get peer help when confronted with technical difficulties by using the Wiki's discussion forum.

Our team believes that this unique set of systems and resources makes ANTS different from other shared repositories. This is because our open source systems are open to all librarians and our utilization of Social Software works to eliminate duplication of effort across institutions. From the start of this project our goal has been to provide the necessary infrastructure so that librarians do not have to reinvent the wheel at each library. So if you believe in the value of inter-institutional shared development of library tutorials, we would encourage you to become a participant and add to our collection. It is an initiative that would benefit library users everywhere!

ANTS Beginnings

This project was an outgrowth of an initiative started by the COPPUL Distance Education Information Literacy Working Group. The group existed from 1998 to 2007. When it initially came together in 1998, one of the issues it set out to address was how institutions could collaborate in the provision of Information Literacy to Distance Education Students.

The first initiative undertaken by the group was the creation of their Doing Research from a Distance online tutorial. It was a comprehensive information literacy tutorial that discussed finding information, evaluating information, citing information, etc. Despite the marketing of it to our Distance Education Students, it was clear by 2004 that the tutorial was getting very little use.

At the same time, newer technology that allowed librarians to quickly capture search screens, add audio or text, and highlight or point to pertinent areas of a search screen, came into existence. This technology was identified as being more user friendly and more interactive. It would also allow librarians to create Point of Need tutorials for highly used electronic resources; but it was recognized that creating and updating an Animated Tutorial for each e-resource would require a lot of work. As a result, in 2004, the COPPUL Distance Education Information Literacy Group was asked to look into ways to enable librarians to collaborate in the development of Point of Need Tutorials.

The group met in September 2004 - along with the Chair of the COPPUL Public Services Group. Several items were identified for development or follow up and by the Spring of 2005 these undertakings were completed. The group subsequently made a presentation about the project to the COPPUL Public Services Group in November 2005 and received some very positive and helpful feedback in the process. This feedback was integrated into the overall plan for the project. Then in February 2006, the Project was announced to COPPUL Librarians.

Opening the Project beyond COPPUL

Almost as soon as the project was released, discussion arose around opening the project up beyond COPPUL Librarians. In particular, ANTS Team members recognized that the Open Source products we used would not restrict who could participate and that the more participants we had, the more likely it would be that we could create the critical mass of tutorials that we were striving to achieve. As a result, requests were made to expand the project, and in September 2006, ANTS was given the go ahead to open the project to any librarian regardless of institution of origin. Consequently, ANTS is now international in scope and open to professional librarians around the globe.

Moving Beyond Database Tutorials

In 2006 and 2007 ANTS members gave presentations about the project at CLA, Access 2006, and ACRL. At the time several librarians indicated that they would like to see many different types of tutorials added to the project. The ANTS Team took their recommendations under advisement and expanded the project to include any type of library related learning objects including:

The group also encountered many new people excited about the project in these meeting and some eventually became members of the ANTS Team.

New ANTS Sites

During the initial phases of the project, the ANTS Team also received feedback from participants and interested parties related to additional desirable features for the project. This feedback – along with our own list of preferences – led us to look for Wikis and Broadcast Sites that would enable us to do more. As a result, starting in the Spring of 2007, the ANimated Tutorial Sharing Project introduced a number of new sites. In particular:

All content found on our old web page (www.brandonu.ca/library/coppul) and our old Wiki (http://wiki.uwinnipeg.ca/index.php/COPPUL_Tutorials ) was migrated to this Wiki in order to take advantage of its Social Networking, Tagging, Sharing, and Discussion Forum features.
Responding to concerns that (a) not all SWF files displayed well at DSpace, and (b) that DSpace did not provide embedding code, Paul Pival at the University of Calgary, secured Techsmith's sponsorship and thereby provide us with our Screencast.com site. This Sponsorship was renewed again in September 2008!
In response to requests to have a YouTube-like site, and enable us to Push ANTS content out to popular brand sites, we introduced our LION TV site in May of 2008. To read more about it, click here.

Moving Beyond Sharing to Providing Information about Screencasting

Expanding the project to include new sites, led the initial ANT Team members - Carmen Kazakoff-Lane (Brandon University), Paul Pival (University of Calgary) and Bill Badke (Trinity Western University) to conclude that we would need more people on the Team to assist with the additional workload. As a result, in the Fall of 2007, Paul Betty (Regis University), Richard Baer (Camuson College) and Duncan Dixon (Trinity Western University) were added to the team. These new members brought with them a host of new ideas that we all felt were important to share with others. As a result, both existing and new team members felt it would be good to add new sections to the Wiki that discussed how to optimize tutorials, measure their usage using Google Analytics, and get User Feedback using existing online survey technology. These and other ideas were added to the Wiki under our Best Practices in Screencasting Section and our How to Embed Tutorials Section. Team members also sought out to use the new Wiki’s Discussion Forum to post discussions about Camtasia or Captivate.

It is our hope that new and better ideas will continue to be added and discussed at this site. In so doing, we hope that ANTS contributors will share more than tutorials --- they will also share knowledge.

The Tutorial's Home: DSpace

In order to make Animated Tutorials easy to identify and share, all shared Tutorials are uploaded and housed in one location: DSpace at the Unviersity of Calgary.

DSpace is an Open Source Institutional Repository that can handle a wide variety of file types. It also:

Is accessible to any librarian who registers with DSpace.
Is archival in quality.
Allows for the incorporation of Metadata
Is Searchable and Browseable

DSpace also contains a Creative Commons License that asks that all depositors make their creation publicly accessible as a condition of depositing any learning object in it. In so doing the author retains copyright, but ensures that their creation remains in the Public Domain.

Anyone wishing to learn how to use D-Space can do so by viewing Uploading Tutorials to the DSpace Shared Tutorial Database . This will tell you how to register for D-Space, how to upload files, and how to subscribe to D-Space so you can be notified whenever new content is added. Those adding Camtasia files will also wish to view our How to Load Camtasia files to DSpace Tutorial as well. Those using Captivate should view our Optimizing your Adobe Captivate projects for use in the ANTS project (below) as well as view our Formating Adobe Captivate Tutorial for ANTS Tutorial. All tutorials and information lay out how to contribute in a very easy fashion so you can easily contribute files ot this project!

ANTS also introduced two sites where you can get source code, shockwave flash files, flash movie files, AVI files, and soon MPEG 4 Video (m4v) files - as well as embedding code for SWF and FLV files. You do not have to upload - or convert - files to these sites, as we do it for you. Further information about the sites is available here..

Registering for D-Space

To register for D-Space go to https://dspace.ucalgary.ca and select Sign On to My DSpace. If you do not have an account you will be prompted for information. Follow the prompts and an account will be created for you. Alteratively, you can also contact our DSpace administrator - Paul Pival (ppival@ucalgary.ca) - and he will create an account for you. If you wish to learn more about registering, please consult Uploading Tutorials to the DSpace Shared Tutorial Database.

Including Relevant Metadata

In order to ensure that all relevant information about the Tutorial is included when you submit your Tutorial to DSpace, please ensure that the following information is included:

Author of the Tutorial
Name of the Tutorial
Name of the Database or E-book / E-journal Collection the Tutorial deals with.
Name of the Database Vendor
When it was Created / Updated
Keywords
Abstract
Description of the Tutorial
File Type
Optional Information such as Contact Information, Viewing Time and Intended Audience (i.e Undergrads)

DSpace will prompt you for most of this information whenever you upload your Tutorial and will also include a listing of the File Size. What it will not prompt you for is any Optional Information, Database/Collection Names and Vendor Information. Consequently, this information must be listed in the Abstract or Description Fields.

Optimizing your Adobe Captivate projects for use in the ANTS project

For use in the ANTS project, you'll need to create a single Shockwave Flash .SWF file that includes all the necessary content for your tutorial. However, I've noticed a couple default settings in Adobe Captivate that will result in multiple .SWF files when you publish your projects. These are summarized in the following post:

As alluded to in the post above, Captivate 3 records any scrolling of pages done with the mouse as a seperate Fullmotion .SWF file. For any of you who have updated from version 2 to version 3, you may have noticed this when you publish your projects. If you capture lengthy web pages with lots of scrolling, then your published project can end up with many small Fullmotion .swf files. These Fullmotion .swf files are separate files that are called into the larger project at the appropriate places when they are viewed. The advantage is that the core .SWF file and the Fullmotion .SWF files are split up, minimizing file size for enhanced streaming. But for the ANTS project, we ask that you supply us with a single, all inclusize .SWF file we can convert to other formats for distribution. So how can you publish a single .SWF file in Captivate 3:

1.) If you've selected to include playback controls for your tutorial, deselect the option to "Show Borders" under the Project -- Skin -- Borders menu. This will include the playback controls in the main .SWF file.

2.) Instead of using the mouse to scroll up and down, use the keyboard arrow instead. Click the scroll bars with the mouse to gain focus first, but rather than click and drag, use the arrow keys. Captivate will capture this movement as typing instead of a separate Fullmotion video.

Of course, if you do not include playback controls, or you do not have any scrolling or fullmotion included in your project, then you do not need to make any adjustments.
